Fullback Pumped to Block for NFL Beast Derrick Henry
Baltimore Ravens fullback Pat Ricard couldnโt hide his excitement when free agent Derrick Henry signed with the team.
โItโs a dream come true for any blocker,โ said Ricard, a four-time Pro Bowler.
Henry, considered one of the leagueโs best running backs, had many interested teams. Ricard knew it would be a tough get for Baltimore.
โHeโs one of those guys you never think you can get because everyone wants him,โ Ricard said. โBut Eric [DeCosta, Ravens general manager] worked his magic.โ
Fans are buzzing about the possibilities with these two giants in the backfield. Practices have offered a glimpse of the potential, but the real test will come with full contact.
โI canโt wait for training camp,โ Ricard said. โWeโll see how defenses handle it. Add Lamar [Jackson] to the mix, and itโs going to be a nightmare for them.โ
Even Ravens coach John Harbaugh is enthusiastic about the pairing.
โIt gives us a lot of options,โ Harbaugh said. โWe have playmakers, a big offensive line, and weโre excited.โ
Ricard has known Henry for years from Pro Bowls but never got to know him well. Now, heโs impressed.
โHeโs like a perfect player in a video game,โ Ricard said. โHeโs everything they say he is. Weโre lucky to have him.โ
Last year, there were questions about Ricardโs role in the new offense. He played less than before but still saw significant snaps.
This year, questions surround how much Ricard will be used as a lead blocker with Henry around. Ricard might still see snaps as an extra blocker or even use his receiving skills.
โWeโll see how it goes,โ Harbaugh said. โBut thereโs always a place for a guy like Pat. Heโll be out there playing a big role.โ
